If you’re like most of us, you’re pretty good at knowing what you don’t want. For instance, we tend to think things like, “I don’t want to be stuck in traffic this morning” or “I don’t want my kids to whine when they get off of the bus” or “I don’t want the house to have any more problems.”
Here’s the crazy thing, though: the more we focus on what we don’t want, the more we get exactly that. We don’t want traffic, and we send out that negative thought into the world? We’ll probably be stuck in traffic. We don’t want our kids to whine, but we keep fixating on that? Well, they probably will.
Because the universe has a law, a law that I keep testing and finding to be true. Call this law whatever you want to: positive thinking, the Law of Attraction, the Secret, rules from Think and Grow Rich, whatever you want. But the law is always the same: if we send out energy towards something, even towards something that we don’t want, the universe recognizes our focus on it, and it will work to bring more of that to us.
The reverse of this law is the truly amazing part, though. Because as soon as we turn our energy into a positive, “feeling good” energy, and focus only on what we do want, then the universe will start to deliver more of that.
And while many of us have heard these concepts before, it’s hard to actually follow through on a daily basis. We don’t believe in the law, or we just don’t know how to turn things around even if we do “believe”. So here are the rules of the game, for believers and non-believers both, from what I’ve distilled from reading every book I could find on the subject (my favorite is Excuse Me Your Life is Waiting – simple, easy to follow, and the author is a mortgage broker so she lives in the real world.)
Each one of these could be a blog post in and of themselves (and I’ll probably write them!), but in its simplest form, here is how to get more of what you want in life:
How to Get What You Want:
- Figure out what you want. It’s sometimes easiest to look at what we don’t want, and then flip that around, describing our ideal situation for work/finances/relationship, etc. It’s also helpful to add here an intention for this thing that we want as “this or something greater”, since we never know the infinite possibilities for more.
- Focus on why you want the thing that you want, digging really deeply into the good feelings around what it will feel like when you get it. Whether that be more money, more love, a better relationship, etc., focus on why you want it. Why do you want more money? What would you do with it? How would that vacation feel to you? How would a new relationship look and feel to you? What would that person bring to you? How would a great relationship with your family feel to you? What do you feel like as you excelling in that new job or business?
- Get into feeling good about that thing that you want, and not thinking about how it will come to you. We leave the “how” up to God/Spirit/Universe, and don’t worry about the way that it will come to us or in what version. (For instance, I’ve been manifesting checks coming in the mail, and my husband came home last night and told me we are getting a big refund from an error the county had made with our taxes. When I told him I had manifested that money, he said “I caught the error, not the universe!”. To which I replied, “I don’t worry about the how!”)
- Express gratitude for all that you currently have and all that you are already receiving. I find it most helpful to do daily gratitude journaling, listing all of the things that I feel genuine gratitude for, as well as gratitude for the things that I would like to see in my life. I write them as if they were already there, and really feel how nice it would be to already have them. (This is one step in the process that we often forget. I was discussing how I was manifesting checks coming in the mail, but that what I was receiving wasn’t enough, when I was reminded by a wise soul that I need to be grateful for the smaller checks, because they add up to the amount that I have requested.)
- Each time a worry or concern over the thing that you don’t want comes up (and it most likely will!), begin to think about what you do want instead, and why that feels good to you. If it’s hard to get into that head space, focus on something else that is great and wonderful instead. Find some puppies on the internet or think of your child sleeping peacefully, whatever it is, turn your attention away from what you don’t want as quickly as you can.
The only way to truly feel the power of this law is to put it into action (it’s already in action in your life, just possibly not in the way you would like it to be.) Do some testing of it, giving a few minutes each day to the rules listed on this page, and see what it does for you!
I’m a believer!
